As the largest recall in the history of the automobile it’s not surprising the Ford GT got sucked into the Takata airbag recall. In early 2015 a recall notice was sent to all Ford GT owners informing them their driver’s airbag needed to be replaced because of the defective Takata airbag inflator. Unlike many recalls, this one really is scary because it can result in metal shrapnel being thrown at vehicle occupants. Think IED in your steering wheel.

The recall notice didn’t confirm when the replacement airbag would be available

The most troubling aspect of this recall was that the notice only confirmed the airbag needed to be replaced. It didn’t offer to replace it because the parts weren’t available yet. And given both the number of recalled airbags across the industry and the niche nature of the Ford GT I wasn’t optimistic about the arrival of a new airbag. Part of me wanted to simply disconnect it to avoid any flying shrapnel while I waited.
